The Portree Hotel stands on Somerled Square, in the centre of the Isle of Skye’s main town, with its own restaurant and bar. The shops, the pubs and the chippy are all outside.

Skye in winter is a different island. Crisp mornings when the view from the Storr runs to the horizon and the track is empty. Late light breaking over Ben Tianavaig and falling onto Portree harbour. Wind that drives breakers onto the rocks at Neist Point.
There is a peace to it, even in the storms. A hibernation, broken by short walks along the shore, and winter light across the ridgelines. This is the season the island’s ruggedness shows.
Drams on cold days, the crunch of frost underfoot, and places that feel entirely your own.
Portree Hotel Rooms and Restaurant
The rooms are upstairs, Antlers and the West Highland Bar on the ground floor, so breakfast, and perhaps more importantly coffee, is only a flight of stairs away. Lunch and dinner are both served in the restaurant if you want to stay in house, and there are around ten restaurants nearby if you want to try something new.

Where We Are in Portree
The hotel is on Somerled Square, with pay-and-display parking outside and the long-stay car park at Bayfield a few minutes on foot. Citylink coaches from Inverness, Glasgow and Fort William stop on the square, so the whole trip works without a car. The shops and cafés are round the square, the harbour and its painted houses are down the Pier Brae, and a couple of walks start at the water.
Things to Do from Your Portree Hotel
You get up and pick a direction, perhaps based on the weather. The Storr before breakfast. The Quiraing at sunrise. The Fairy Pools after rain. Rain in the north, go south. Back in Portree by dark, boots off, dinner in the restaurant, and no hour of single-track to psyche yourself up for after a long day in the hills.
Things to do from Portree
The car park fills by ten in summer. Go up before breakfast and come back to it.
Glen Brittle, under the Cuillin. The falls are at their best the day after rain, and the pools are at their brightest and clearest after drier weather, perfect for a cold swim.
The loop round the Trotternish ridge takes about two hours, starting and finishing at the hotel. You see the Storr along the way, and the view over to the mainland.
Carbost, on Loch Harport. Do the tour in the afternoon and explore the west of Skye in the morning, with its historic places and unusual places to eat.
Sligachan. Photograph the old bridge like everyone else, then walk into the glen, which most people don’t. You might even find a quiet place to take a dip, if the Fairy Pools don’t appeal.
